3Another project guitar  Mar 03, 2012

Oh boy, how to explain. So I ignore my own sage advice to disregard this brand (after trashing it in two previous reviews, see reviews on the E430 headless guitar and the E440), and buy myself a third one! Why the hell would I do that!?

For 1) I am stupid, a sucker for a "good deal" even if the referenced list price is a gross overstatement in wishful thinking (supposedly this guitar lists at a laughable $749) - this guitar was temporarily on sale for $149 (now it appears to be even cheaper at $134), and at that price it starts to make a little sense. And 2), I was looking for a new project base. Expecting lousy hardware and with the horrible finish with painted-on f-holes (yikes!!!) I was planning to gut everything, and to repaint the guitar (in metallic copper, mmmmh!).
And I will still continue with the plan, but for those of you who just want to play the guitar out of the box I can say this guitar is not entirely bad (for $149, mind you). The guitar arrived in a two-box, but had a bent strap button on the lower body - somebody must have let the guitar hit the floor prior to packing. The damage on the body was not bad, and I simply replaced the button. Sticklers would return the guitar, no doubt, but for me it is not worth the hassle.
The guitar has a Floyd Rose style locking trem, which is much better than the junk trem they have on the E440, at least you should expect to be able to safely change strings. The pick-ups sounded allright (the bridge pick-up is reasonably hot, but lacks definition when chording, the SC and Neck pick-ups are ok) and thanks to the 5-way switch you can get a variety of tones out of the guitar. There is no tone knob on the guitar, just the volume knob. The guitar has sort of a two tone tobacco burst finish with truly atrocious looking painted f-holes - repaint it or slap some decals on, it'll look better. The body has a plastic 1-ply binding, and the Wizzard II style neck is bound as well. The finish overall is pretty poor, with many imperfections, but the guitar plays well, and that is what counts at this pricepoint.
