5This is a roarin' overdrive pedal!  Oct 13, 2010
By Slashaholic Anonymous "Steve"
I really like this MXR wylde overdrive pedal. It's sort of like a higher gain, more metal sounding tube screamer when you use it to push the front end of an already-overdriven amp. That's how Mr. Wylde uses it, and I've found that it sounds its best when used that way as well. My ibanez ts-9dx tube screamer is a great pedal as well, but when I used it in conjunction with my already-high-gain amp, it sounded a little harsh and "fizzy". And tonally, the ibanez added a lot of low mid-range that really muddied up the sound, regardless of how I EQ'ed the amp or the pedal. So I bought the Wylde Overdrive hoping that it would give my tone a little extra chunk to the bass and crunch in the highs; and it does just that. The wylde overdrive has more gain on tap than most overdrive pedals or tube screamers; I never turn the gain past 12 o'clock, and even with that level of gain pinch harmonics are much more pronounced and easy to pull off. A lot of reviews mentioned a ton of feedback when using the pedal; but not in my experience. Obviously if you crank the gain on the pedal then you're going to get some unwanted hum and feedback.
On a different note, when I switch this pedal on over my clean tone, it actually adds a very warm, bluesy overdrive. This further emphasizes that while this pedal is a little more gainy than most overdrives, it's definitely not a "distortion" pedal. Don't expect this pedal to take you from clean to roarin' metal tones. But if you're looking for something to push the front end of your amp to take you to that next level, or if you're just after a good overdrive pedal to give you a boost and some dirt for a blues lead or something, I highly recommend checking out the MXR Wylde Overdrive.

5What an overdrive was meant to be  May 26, 2011

It's simple, small, and packs a punch. Throw this sucker in front of a dirty tube amp and unleash your true tone. It's built like a freakin a tank. It's small in size, but has the sound of a giant. I love this pedal, it's got an edge over any other OD I've used - similar to FullTone OD's, you won't be disappointed, especially for the price.

5Good pedal for use with existing overdriven/distorted amp  Jan 12, 2011
By B. Voris "B. V."
What can I say about this product:This is a pedal designed for overdriven or distorted (tube)amps. When used by itself it seems thin with good tone but needs that extra kick. I use this with my amps overdrive, a distortion pedal or sometimes my BD-2. Once you have it figured out you will have some incredible sustain, I really do mean incredible sustain. Its got kick for active pickups, passive sound pretty decent on it. I bought mine used from a guy that could not figure out how to use it for $60, great deal since he had only used it a dozen times. Slashaholic Anonymous was dead right on his review for the pedal.

I have used it on: Gibson LP and Epiphone. Marshal Amp. Gibson and Dunlop Zakk Custom strings.

Playing style: Rock, Classic, Metal, Blues

Good: when used in conjunction with an overdriven or distorted amp it will shred, you can increase your sustain with this pedal. Its designed for sustain and harmonics but can be used as a blues overdrive by itself. I used this in conjunction with a Boss BD-2 for blues and the tones you get are incredible.

Bad: Over priced get one used. By itself its a bit thin and lame sounding (hey its designed as an add-on pedal!)

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
Good product once you know how to use it and what to use it with. Don't expect to get this pedal and sound like Zakk out of the box by itself. Needs overdrive or distortion to get it where you want it.

Additional Recommendations: Marshal Amp with an overdrive channel or Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive.
